Spends approximately $1.68 billion of general funds

SPRINGFIELD – As legislators in Springfield continue to work to find a bipartisan solution to the budget impasse, State Representative Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) is supporting legislation that aims at creating a stable and responsible approach in funding higher education.

“We can’t afford to continue to blindly allocate taxpayer dollars without taking into consideration how we are going to pay for it,” said Rep. Demmer. “My colleagues and I have identified a new higher education proposal that is funded with general funds.”

Stillman Valley… As part of program to allow elected officials to understand educational needs for Illinois students, State Representative Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) was invited to be “Principal for a Day” at Meridian CUSD 223.

“Providing a quality education for our children is a top priority for Illinois,” said Rep. Demmer. “I’m pleased to have this opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge that I’ll use when working on education issues at the Capitol. Today, I listened to teachers, students and administrators about what’s working well and what we can and should do better.”
Bipartisan group will focus on building consensus on 21st-century issues platform

Chicago… On Friday, State Representative and Future Caucus co-chair Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) joined other young colleagues in the Illinois House to announce the launch of the Illinois Future Caucus.

The Future Caucus is a bipartisan group of young leaders who believe that cooperation, not conflict, should be the dominant political paradigm, and who are committed to working together to address the challenges facing the next generation of Illinoisans.

“I am proud to join my colleagues in reaching across party lines and working on the issues that face our generation,” said Rep. Demmer.  “As newer arrivals on the political scene, we know that people expect better than what they’re getting from Illinois government, and we believe that as a group, we can work to transcend the partisan gridlock and get things done for our constituents.”

Illinois becomes the twelfth state to form a Future Caucus of young legislators, joining a diverse group of states including Wisconsin, Ohio, Texas, and Hawaii. The state caucuses work in concert with the Congressional Future Caucus, co-chaired by US Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) and US Rep. Will Hurd (R-TX).

The group will meet regularly in Springfield to discuss current issues, and will seek to identify legislation that the Caucus can put forward as a group.
